This is not Tango - it is a show. And if you like, you can do it too. Get yourself a dancer and practice with him the same steps for a couple of months :-)
I stay with the Tango.

Hi Franz,
Thanks for commenting but I disagree.

Javier Rodriguez has more Tango in his little finger than all the readers of this blog and myself combined. Same with Andrea Misse.

If you read my blog you know that I think Tango has little to do with steps and LOTS to do with connection, and “The Ghost.”

If you do my personal favorite thing and cover the lower half of the screen and just watch their upper bodies you will see that they are CONNECTED - which is the #1 thing for me when I dance.

Go read this:
http://tinatangos.wordpress.com/2007/08/02/the-ghost/

And you’ll see why I think this IS Tango.

What’s NOT Tango is when the people are not dancing for each other -and these two ARE dancing for each other.

Just a comment to nobody in particular (thought crept into my head):

While I have a strong preference for the milonguero style, I am so sick and tired of people saying that something is not Tango just because someone kicked or did a boleo, or opened up for a bit. Sure, Tango isn’t about how many steps you can do but SO WHAT if you happen to feel energized by the music and feel inclined to do a lot of footwork one day. As long as you are connected and finding each other in the music, and dancing with soul, (which these two lovely dancers are doing), it’s ok.

P.S. Read what I wrote below the video.

“….and her ability to use them while staying ever so connected and in the music.”

Tina, I couldn’t agree with you more. Both Javier and Andrea are amazing, and he’s opened his wings tremendously without Geraldine, if you ask me… he stopped being her shadow to really developing and expressing himself. This is not a show. It is true Tango.

Tina, I also agree with you, and I adore milonguero style ,but these two are really good. Just because they’re putting on a show doesn’t mean it isn’t tango. They aren’t doing ballet and the splits and all that acrobatic stuff; they’re just dancing very energetic salon style tango.

Dear Santa,

Please be reasonable… if you give her Andrea’s feet, she’ll find a partner like Javier and stop dancing with us!

- A selfish leader :-)

Anton, that was a very cute counter-wish. I hope Santa gives both of you what you want.

Oh Anton! hehehe

ok if I get Andrea’s feet, you can have Javier’s walk. Happy? :)
Nuit: yeah…they are fabulous.

I think it’s just plain blasphemous to say that Javier & Andrea - of all people - are not dancing Tango. My oh my…

Well, I too think they dance very, very well. HOWEVER, I am clearly the heretic in this department. I’m very persnickety about my embellishments, and find that Andrea (and other stellar, but to be un-named, Javier ex-partners) just WAAAAAAAAAAY overdo them.

I can appreciate the skill required, but do not find this frenzy of flicks, kicks, and flings attractive at all. To me they look like tse tse flies are biting at her ankles, and chewing gum has gotten stuck on her heel.

Less is more, I say!

HARUMPH.

Hello Johanna!

But of course, too many embellishments can take away from the dance and the music.

When executed at *just* the right moment they can be delicious - but yes, it’s important to take care not to make the dance ALL about the kicks & snaps & such.

What I’m trying to say is by wanting her feet, I mean that I want her ability to do such beautiful sharp movements without losing form or connection. One of my weaknesses has always been strength of core (it’s getting better), so I tend to gravitate towards dancers who can do thos things while staying grounded and in control. I have axis envy. ;-) And I’m sorry, but her feet look hot.
I admire that she can do all this and still stay with Javier in the dance.

On a side note, I was just thinking about how I like him partnered with Andrea… I feel like I can equally watch both of them. When he was with Geraldine, I felt like I could only watch Geraldine. This partnership seems more balanced.

It’s ALL about balance, Tina. Don’t you think? :-)
