A couple of weeks ago I mentioned coming home from a milonga at 3am to find my roommates getting ready to leave the house for a party. I got a lot of comments and especially e-mails on that one for some reason.
What amuses me is that people were so taken by the fact that I was up at 3am that they failed to notice that the roommates were LEAVING to START their night at 3am.
What also amuses me is that people seems to think I’m a party girl and brave and wild for being up so late one night a week. I’ve also had a few friends admiringly say they wish they could do that.
I think I should probably make a few statements to clarify things.
1. The nights are different here than they are elsewhere. People don’t eat dinner until aroud 10pm, for example, and sometimes even later. I have seen families with little children in restaurants well past midnight. (That said, I’m a hungry girl and eat at 8pm if I’m home alone).
2. The nights are also different here in that oftentimes the real “partying” doesn’t actually start until AFTER 3am.
3. I dance Tango. Once or twice a week. This involves sitting down at a table, fanning myself and making (or avoiding) eye contact with people. And of course when the fancy strikes me, dancing. Not what I’d consider a wild night.
Oh, and I leave “early” at 2 or 2:30am. People who are twice my age and older stay until the end at 4am. Tango does that to you.
4. I have to work. That’s why I don’t dance during the week. I have to get up at 6am or so to answer e-mails from clients that are in another part of the world a few hours ahead of me. So generally I go to bed around midnight.
Is that clear everyone?

I enjoy your lifestyle, and I know deep down some days you are a bit frisky meaning you go out at 7 and come home by 9pm…wow u crazy girl….hehe
This reminds me of Barcelona!! Last time I went, eating dinner before 10 or 11pm was unheard of, the best clubs didn’t open until 2am, and at 7am the streets are full of people (of all ages) stumbling home from the clubs.
haha…you know I was just giving you a hard time. I know that it’s a whole different life down there.
I just like to tease you, you wild and crazy girl!! Our “wild” night last night consisted of an early dinner in downtown Phoenix followed by a movie and in bed by 11. hehe.
Oh don’t worry, I wasn’t aiming at you with that
I remember our wild nights in West Seattle… the Lizard Lounge followed by snacks from Admiral Thriftway, LOL
