The internet at home stopped working so I wandered up to a cool cafe in my neighborhood. It’s not your typical Buenos Aires cafe. It feels more like a cafe in Seattle or Berkeley. It’s very open and spacious, light and airy, gorgeous dark wooden tables, exposed brick walls on two sides, very interesting decorations… I need to come here with my camera. Even though my Spanish has evolved incredibly, I can’t understand what the waiter says nor can I answer him, as he is too good looking. That happens to me.
I’ve turned in my two little translations and am catching up on blogs, enjoying how cool the air is in here. There’s some funky blues playing in the background and a mosquito won’t leave me alone. I’ve decided that I really like my neighborhood. It’s just so laid back, nobody foreign has ever heard of it, the streets are wide, it’s safe, and it feels like… well, a neighborhood. I’m glad I moved out of the more “downtown” area. This is just so much better.
The only inconvenience is that all the shops have a siesta from 2pm to 6pm. That’s a little odd for a siesta time, but that’s what they do. Yesterday I had Miss Tango over, and I had forgotten all about the siesta and had to run all around the neighborhood until I found a store that was open so I could buy wine. I will remember next time, I hope.
It’s been very hot here but I’m able to handle it. My roommates came up with the idea of covering the skylight with blankets and it’s like night and day. There’s not as much light in the house but it’s much cooler and I can get my work done without getting uncomfortable.
On the list of things to do today: plan a lesson for my English student (I’m not teaching regularly but this just sort of fell into my lap), give myself a pedicure, think of something interesting to cook. If a translation comes in, that will all change, but for now I’ll just enjoy this quiet time. It’s a lazy summer day.
