Since I’ve decided to stay at least until the end of March (so, an extra month), I have to look for a new place to live. This apartment I have will be unavailable after the 29th of February.
On craigslist I saw that there is a room available in a big house in San Telmo, and one of the people living in the house happens to be Italian, from Rome. I had to answer the ad, if only to speak Italian with someone. Today I took the bus (the bus!) to San Telmo and met him and saw the room. He’s great, and I can see that they are really doing some cool things to this funky old house, which is full of character and history. The room, alas, is a little dark for my taste and the stairs in the house scare me. They are a little bit steep. I decided to keep looking for now, but I got along really well with the Italian and it would be nice to have him for a roommate.
Since I was in San Telmo, I decided to walk up Defensa at a leisurely pace and observe the architecture. I passed art galleries, restaurants and antique shops as I made my way through magical San Telmo. It really is a charming neighborhood, a bit run-down in some spots but beautiful and full of… something. It reminds me of Florence, Italy in some ways (the average tourist to Florence would not know what I’m talking about, but if you have lived in Florence and know the *real* Florence, you would see parts of it in San Telmo and you’d agree with me).
I stopped at an heladeria and stood on the corner, eating my new soul-mate, dulce de leche ice cream, watching the passersby. The men here really like to see a woman eating gelato. My oh my. A few stopped to stare at me, one told me I looked very content, and several whistled and winked as they passed by. I was entertained, but it’s ice cream for pete’s sake! Well, I have been told that I eat with pleasure and passion. I’m sure that I must be a sight to see, especially in certain circumstances. By the way, I’ve lost a little weight, even with the ice cream. Ha!
I realized I was reaching Plaza de Mayo and I took the Subte the rest of the way home, feeling thankful as it was a hot day and I just wanted to take a nap. Avenida de Mayo is full of good-looking men in suits at about 6pm by the way, in case anyone is wondering.
Tomorrow I will look at a room in a nice house about 10 blocks from where I currently am. I’d like to stay in my neighborhood. I’m getting attached to it. We’ll see how it is… ![]()

Hey, Tina,
Check out bytargentina.com. I used it last time and the services and price are good. Good luck with the apt. Maybe I will see you at the milongas one of these days.
Hooray! International Flirting Week is still going on in Buenos Aires. Keep eating that ice cream and making the guys crazy for you.
Hi TP -Oh yes I know them, they are great! Thing is, I’m not looking for tourist apartments. I want to have a more real experience, have roommates, preferably who are from here. Y’know, to do something different. But thank you for the suggestion - they really are a reputable company.
Tangobaby - flirt flirt!
Were you licking the helado or using the spoon X)
RE: ice cream. My mother, when she was a flight attendant in the late sixties, was not allowed to eat ice cream cones in public in uniform, because it was “too suggestive.” Seriously, that was one of the rules!
I’m so glad you’re staying there another month! Hopefully our time there can overlap.
um, mostly I used the spoon, but it dripped so I had to lick the cone as well. Otherwise I would have had a not-so-suggestive mess all over my hand. ewwww.
