A favorite fellow blogger in Rome wrote this interesting post in response to a NYT article, that I thought I’d share. There seems to be a sentiment (among the comments that respond to the NYT article) that bloggers are just narcissists who carry on about nothing, have no lives, and spend hours in front of the computer, blogging.
Mamma mia!
I know for a fact that it’s not true. The bloggers I do know, happen to be very busy people with very interesting lives - and a blog entry really only takes about 5 - 10 minutes to write, if you think about it. My favorite blogs to read are about travel or living in another country.
Granted, there are some narcissists/arrogant folks/people who just don’t get it out there in the blog world, but I just don’t bother reading them. With blogging I’m interested in finding out how people live in parts of the world I wouldn’t otherwise know.
Why did I start my blog? Well, I started blogging back in 2004, in March, right before a trip to Italy where I was going to study in Siena. Before, when I had traveled or lived abroad, I would send out massive group e-mails describing what I was up to, the things I had seen, the cultural facts I had learned… But it would never fail that I’d always leave someone out or I’d delete an e-mail and therefore not have any record of what I’d written. So, before this Italy trip, I decided to start a blog so that my friends and family could keep track of me and what I was doing. I kept it up and here I am.
I would like to note that on my blog I never gossip and never talk about people I know in the milongas, etc… I keep this blog so that I can have an outlet to write and so that I can share my experiences with friends and family (and you!) as I learn about life down south…
Why do YOU blog?

It started out the same as you…to update lots of friends and family in one place, but has evolved into journaling for myself, plus helping solidify my thoughts….and it’s a great way to meet other people with same interests!
Bloody hell! These days it is near impossible to find time to blog and there are many times when I think I have nothing left to say. But why do I do it? My blog has evolved incredibly, beyond my wildest imaginings, over time from a fairly bland record of my great adventure to dance tango in Argentina to a blog of truth about what it really means to try to live a dream. My blog actually helps me to understand my own truths, and reinforces my reality - what I have achieved. It helps me stay sane, and I hope just possibly, that it may help other people out there who want to live their dreams too. I want to keep writing in the hope that maybe one day I will manage to turn my story into a book. My dream now is to write that inspirational book, and for now writing my blog keeps me believing that one day I will DO IT!

Good subject, Tina. I had so much to say I made a blog entry about it. It really made me reflect on the great things that have come about because of this great medium!

i blog for 2 reasons….to vent and let my unconcious do its thing….and to have a slight and wicked and mangled path back to where i might have been, or not, at some point in my life
